Just wanted to share 3 videos you may or may not have seen before that, despite certain reservations, we thought were very well done.
Above: Polar Bear: Your flight has an impact, was a cinema ad for Plane Stupid, a UK activist group that opposes a third runway at Heathrow airport and advocates to expose the aviation industry’s considerable contribution to climate change.
Many may be turned off and feel it goes too far. Others may resist the direct connection between air travel and the deaths of polar bears. Regardless, it’s a radical, very well conceptualized approach to the issue and we like that it hits hard.
From the YouTube blurb: “We wanted to confront people with the impact that short-haul flights have on the climate. We used Polar Bears because they’re a well understood symbol of the effect that climate change is having on the natural world.”
Above: Charlie Brooker: How to Report the News — Turns out most news segments you see follow a predictable formula. Beyond that, this humorous video speaks for itself.
Above: Green Police: A Super Bowl XLIV commercial. Yup, it’s corporate with a huge budget and cars are bad. But interesting that it depicts a green police state, or even suggests the potential need for, or threat of, such oversight.
The humour with which it takes such a possibility for granted may bother some. And the punchline should have been bicycles. But as a concept and video, though not perfect, we thought it was a very effective way to present and popularize some of the negligence of our wasteful, consumerist culture in a broad and palatable way.
Scanning all the Super Bowl commercials, it also struck us what powerful messages advertisers are capable of and what huge sums of money are focused on selling products, rather than on what huge sums of money *should* be focused on: improving life for all.
Imagine the cultural transformation that would be possible.
