This is a compilation inspired by the peaceful, courageous and building people’s initiative / assembly / direct democracy occupation group, OccupyWallSt.org, and the solidarity assemblies that have emerged across North America / around the world. (See: OccupyTogether.org) And check out our Occupy Canada compilation here.
Given that:
- RIGHT NOW, our shared atmosphere is on an accelerating course to reach a state of potentially unsurvivable, runaway climate extremes during the lives of today’s children;
- Only EMERGENCY international action at EMERGENCY speed *may be* proportional enough to confront the scale, scope and urgency of what is already the greatest crime against humanity, most life and most future life EVER;
If the umbrella crisis of climate breakdown / disruption / destabilization is not tackled fast, its impacts — severe threats to global agriculture, fresh water scarcity and multi-regional insecurity and instability — will make it impossible to address ALL other global issues and causes.
ecoSanity (now climateye) got behind the recent Washington D.C. and Ottawa tar sands protests out of appreciation for the escalation to peaceful civil disobedience on larger scales.
Now, the building people’s initiative / assembly / horizontal direct democracy occupation group Occupy Wall Street has inspired Occupy Together, a hub for info about solidarity assemblies that have emerged across North America, with plans to launch in Canadian cities on Saturday, Oct. 15.
Imperfect, with multi-pronged motivations, Occupy Wall Street must grapple with a variety of concerns about its fundamental identity and intent. Examples: Use of the problematic term ‘occupy’; suggestions of a colonialist mentality; issues of representation / exclusion, privilege, racism, relations of power / oppression; challenges of process; supposed idealism / naivety.
Here’s a great piece full of insights about why this is hard:
So real it hurts – Notes on Occupy Wall St, M. M. Maharawal, LeftTurn.org
But faced with the systemic corruption of global politics and economics; the ecocidal / suicidal mentalities of growth / consumerism; deadly fossil fuel-based, greenhouse gas-intensive energy addiction; and the resource wars and global inequity that all of this perpetuates…
Mass, peaceful, public assemblies / protests rooted in the critical efforts necessary to learn about, nurture, strengthen and maximize solidarity, and the courage to engage in peaceful civil disobedience / direct action on a grand scale — together — are imperative.
